The second men’s golf major of the year tees off on Thursday night (9pm AEST) with seven Australians set to feature in the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina.

Elvis Smylie, the son of Australian tennis great Liz Smylie, will make his first start in a major on American soil after being rewarded by the PGA of America for his two-shot victory over mentor Cameron Smith at the Australian PGA Championship last year on his way to winning the PGA Tour of Australasia’s Order of Merit.

Smylie made his major debut at last year’s British Open via qualifying and the 23-year-old has been plying his trade on the DP World Tour since his win in Brisbane earned him a two-year exemption to the formerly named European Tour.

Fellow 23-year-old Karl Vilips is another Australian rising star making just his second major appearance.

The PGA Tour rookie missed the cut at the 2023 US Open as an amateur, but his maiden win on the primary US Tour at the Puerto Rico Open in March booked a major return.

Vilips shares road to PGA Championship | 06:32

It is ten years since Jason Day won this very tournament at Whistling Straits, but the former world number one is under an injury cloud having withdrawn from last week’s Truist Championship with a disc herniation in his neck.

Fellow Australian major champions Adam Scott and Cameron Smith will be taking part, while Min Woo Lee will be eager to make a major statement after picking up his first PGA Tour victory at the Houston Open before The Masters.

Cam Davis rounds out the Australian contingent, buoyed by the memories of his impressive Presidents Cup debut at Quail Hollow in 2022.

All eyes will be on Masters champion Rory McIlroy as he looks to carry his momentum forward at a venue he has won at four times previously as part of the PGA Tour’s annual stops.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will also attract plenty of attention following claiming his first win of the year two weeks ago, and after sensationally being arrested before the second round of this tournament a year ago.

WEATHER FORECAST

Wild weather has already wreaked havoc at Quail Hollow with Monday’s practice rounds cancelled due to heavy rain swamping the course.

Currently, showers are predicted to hit Charlotte on Saturday, but the remainder of the weekend should be quite dry.

Although it seems the worst of the weather is behind us, the North Carolina rain has left behind a squishy, soggy” surface, which according to pundit Brandel Chamblee could equal the playing field.

“The fact that there’s been so much water on this golf course blows it open just a little bit more,” Chamblee told Live From The PGA.

“So you have an underdog story percolating as well.”

Thursday

30 degrees, partly sunny and humid, 8 per cent chance of rain

Friday

32 degrees, very warm and muggy with sunny periods, 3 per cent chance of rain

Saturday

31 degrees, humid with some sun; breezy in the morning, then a stray thunderstorm in the afternoon; storms can bring flooding downpours and localised damaging wind gusts, approximately 2.4mm of rain

Sunday

30 degrees, less humid with sunny periods, 1 per cent chance of rain
