‘You can’t do that!’ Drama erupts as pair THROWN OUT in ‘outrageous’ BBL scenes

There’s been massive drama in the Renegades’ final round match of BBL14 with two bowlers suspended in stunning scenes at Marvel Stadium.

In a must-win clash against the Brisbane Heat, skipper Will Sutherland was the first given his marching orders in “outrageous” scenes on Saturday.

Sutherland was warned inside the opening over for running on the protected area, and was later banned from returning to bowl in the 12th over when umpire Donovan Koch deemed he’d encroached again.

“This is outrageous – he wasn’t deliberately doing it,” former Australian opener David Warner said.

“That’s an extraordinary decision in a T20 match, especially they’ve got to bat second. It’s not going to do too much damage to the surface,” Brad Haddin added.

But the drama didn’t end there, given both Fergus O’Neill and Tom Rogers were also warned for the same offence.

Only for O’Neill, he too was marched in the 16th over when Koch determined the ‘Gades star went too far on the pitch.

“Another one!” Warner lamented.

“So the umpire is saying he can’t see! That one I don’t disagree with – if he’s been warned before for that.

“He’s almost gone on the other side of the stumps!

“That’s straight in the danger zone – you can’t do that.

“If you’ve been warned once, you’ve got to be very careful.”

‘Gades skipper Sutherland was left with his head in his hands when the O’Neill decision was handed down.

It left opener Josh Brown to once again see out the over – and it proved costly for the Melbourne outfit as he finished with 0-48 off just 2.4 overs.

Under cricket law, “it is unfair for a bowler to enter the protected area in his/her follow-through without reasonable cause, whether or not the ball is delivered”.

“I can see the frustration,” Warner said of the ‘Gades in the field.

“(But) It’s a non negotiable.

“If the umpire says you’re warned once, you quite clearly can’t do it again. I know no bowler means it.

“I’ve never ever in my life seen it (two players thrown out)!

Haddin said it was up to players to adjust – particularly after the penalty handed to Sutherland.

“You can understand just listening to the umpire in the stump mic – he says, ‘I’ve warned you and I can’t make a decision’,” he said.

“As a bowling group, if you know that’s already happened to your captain, you need to be a lot more disciplined to get away from that area.”

‘Gades batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk joked he “might have to warm up soon” as he watched two teammates be suspended from the attack.

“It’s extremely weird,” he said.

“What’s done is done

“Probably shouldn’t be in there … we’re just focused on the next 10 overs.”

The Renegades are now chasing 197 for victory – with anything other than a win ensuring their BBL14 campaign is over.
