A huge fight card in Las Vegas is headlined by a pair of unbeatens as David Benavidez takes on David Morrell.
Benavidez v Morrell | SUN 2 FEB 12PM AEDT | Interim WBC Light Heavyweight Champion David Benavídez and WBA Light Heavyweight Champion David Morrell Jr. meet in a battle of unbeatens that pits two of the sport’s most exciting fighters against each other in the primes of their careers | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports.
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is the WBC interim light heavyweight champion while Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) is the WBA light heavyweight regular champion.
Both are eyeing undisputed champion Artur Beterbiev, the 175-pound king, with the winner set to become mandatory.
Benavidez had been trying for years to fight super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez but after being rejected moved up in weight. This is his second fight at light heavyweight.
“I’m excited to really showcase my skills in this fight,” Benavidez said during an open workout in Las Vegas in early January.
“I had a lot of injuries and adversity going into the (Oleksandr Gvozdyk) fight, but I went in there against one of the best in the world and showed I have a lot of heart.
“The way I fight, I always try to take my opponents out. It doesn’t mean you always get it, but we’re definitely going to be pushing for it. David Morrell has made it personal for me.”
Morrell moved up from the amateur ranks in late 2019 and won nine of his first 10 fights by KO before going the distance vs Radivoje Kalajdzic on the Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov undercard.
Earlier Stephen Fulton upset Brandon Figueroa to win his WBC featherweight title by unanimous decision (116-112 x2, 117-111).
Fulton also beat Figueroa in 2021 by majority decision but that was a junior featherweight title unification match. This was just his second fight at 126 pounds.
Elsewhere on the undercard Isaac Cruz defeated Angel Fierro by unanimous decision (96-95, 97-93, 98-92) in an early fight of the year contender, while Jesus Alejandro Ramos Jr. beat Jeison Rosario by eighth-round TKO.
