Magpies’ big coach question answered as premiership boss rejects rival interest for big bucks

Collingwood has re-signed premiership boss Craig McRae on what’s believed to be one of footy’s most lucrative coaching contracts.

The 52-year-old was coming out of contract at the end of the 2026 season with a brilliant start to his senior coaching career making him one of the AFL’s most in-demand mentors.

But McRae has rejected options including Tasmania to sign a two-year extension, meaning he’s locked in at the Magpies until the end of 2028.

The deal is believed to be worth over $1 million a year putting McRae among the highest-paid coaches in the AFL.

“Since arriving at Collingwood, Craig has built a philosophy centred on connection, resilience and getting better every day,” Collingwood president Barry Carp said.

“Under his leadership, the Club has reconnected with its people, honoured its history and brought the Magpie Army along the journey, highlighted by our unforgettable 2023 premiership.

“Internally, Craig drives our family first value and connection between players and staff while emphasising the importance of extending that connection with our 19th player – Collingwood Members and supporters.

“We are delighted this connection will continue for at least three more seasons.”

McRae led Collingwood to a shock top-four finish in his maiden 2022 season followed by winning the 2023 premiership.

While his side missed the 2024 finals, under his stewardship the Magpies have never lost more than nine games in a year.

He has a career record of 67-30 with two draws. His win rate of just under 70 per cent is the highest among active AFL coaches, narrowly ahead of Geelong’s Chris Scott.

Round 1 next season will be his 100th game in charge. Should the Magpies win it, he will have the highest winrate among V/AFL coaches who’ve led their team for at least 100 games, surpassing John Coleman.
