Mahoney was placed on report for the incident in the 52nd minute, where the No.9 “launched” himself at Atkinson, who was laying on the floor after collecting a charged down kick.

Former Bulldogs skipper Michael Ennis compared it to an incident between Richard Villasanti and Brad Fittler in the 2002 Grand Final, before airing concerns that Mahoney “might be in some trouble here.”
Fox League’s Andrew Voss noted “if (Mahoney’s) made contact with the head, he’s got a problem.”

It was the second time Mahoney was placed on report for a dangerous tackle in the game, with the No.9 set for a nervous wait to see if he will miss time for his indiscretions.
Speaking to Fox League post-game, the hooker saw nothing wrong with his actions.
“If someone’s laying on the ground, I’m not just going to lay on him,” he said.
“It’s Bulldogs footy.
“We’re tough.
“It’s what we do.”
Mal Meninga told Fox League’s post-game coverage that “you just don’t do that,” while Cooper Cronk believes the Bulldogs star could be in some trouble.
Speaking at his post-game press conference, Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon insisted any potential sin-binning of Reed Mahoney would have had no bearing on the result.
