Glenn Maxwell has demolished the record for the fastest World Cup century, needing just 40 balls to reach triple figures against the Netherlands.
The previous record, set by South Africa’s Aiden Markram who hit a 49-ball ton against Sri Lanka in the 2023 World Cup, never looked a chance of remaining intact once Maxwell found his groove.

Maxwell strode out to the crease with Australia sitting precariously at 6-290 having suffered a collapse of four wickets for just 56 runs.
But Maxwell, who started off somewhat slowly, exploded into life with skipper Pat Cummins at the opposite end of the crease.
The big-hitting Victorian blasted the Dutch bowling attack to every inch of the ground and indeed over the ropes.
He then brought up the milestone with consecutive sixes and roared in delight with his accomplishment, knowing how crucial it was to setting a formidable target for the Netherlands to chase down.

Australian cricket legend Shane Watson was left in awe of Maxwell’s feat on commentary.
“That is outrageous,” Watson said.
“A complete and utter barrage.”
The rest of the cricket community was equally stunned at Maxwell’s mind-boggling feat, made all the more impressive given he revealed he had been “pretty crook all day” in the innings break interview.
Maxwell’s century wasn’t the only record broken during Australia’s innings against the Netherlands.
Unfortunately for Dutch bowler Bas de Leede, he set a World Cup record for most runs conceded by a bowler having shipped a staggering 115 runs from his 10 overs.
It was the highest figure since South African bowler Mick Lewis conceded 113 runs against Australia at the 2006 World Cup.
