Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner will miss the remainder of the Big Bash League after undergoing surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee on Friday morning.
The 30-year-old, who led the Scorchers to a fifth BBL title last summer, limped off the field after bowling one delivery during Wednesday’s nine-wicket victory over the Hobart Hurricanes at Perth Stadium.
Turner, who has managed the knee injury throughout the summer, didn’t take any further part in the match, later undergoing scans that revealed he needed surgery.
The exact time frame for Turner’s return is yet to be confirmed.
The Scorchers will appoint a stand-in captain before the club’s next match against the Melbourne Renegades on Boxing Day, but wicketkeeper Josh Inglis and all-rounder Aaron Hardie are among the leading candidates.

Earlier this week, Turner was signed by the Justin Langer-coached Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League Auction for AU$178,000. The right-hander has represented Australia in nine ODIs and 19 T20Is since his international debut in 2017.
Turner was the Scorchers’ third-leading run scorer last season with 381 runs at 42.33 and a strike rate of 155.51. No cricketer in the tournament scored more runs with a higher strike rate.
The Scorchers, who are yet to taste defeat this summer, are currently second on the BBL ladder with five points.
