The Gold Coast Suns are in turmoil with their AFLW captain requesting a trade out of the club just hours after coach Cam Joyce was sacked with two years left on his contract.

Long-time skipper Tara Bohanna is seeking a move back home to Victoria with Carlton leading the race, according to News Corp, while AFL Media reports she has also met with St Kilda, Collingwood, the Western Bulldogs and GWS.

The request comes following the axing of Joyce, who was re-signed this past June, but then came a dire campaign for the Suns where they finished 17th with just one win, one draw and nine losses despite playing finals in 2023.
The Suns are expected to try and revamp their list by trading for premiership Demon Lily Mithen while reigning best and fairest Charlie Rowbottom is uncontracted, though expected to remain according to AFL Media.
Joyce departs after four seasons and 42 games in charge, first taking over the role in 2022 (season six).
“Following a disappointing 2024 season, we have reviewed all aspects of our AFLW football program to identify how we can continue to improve our performance and ultimately achieve our mission of winning AFLW premierships,” Suns CEO Mark Evans said.
“In order to take those steps forward and compete against the best teams in the AFLW competition, we have decided the club would be best placed under the guidance of a new head coach.
“Cam has led and overseen the transition of our AFLW football program over the past four seasons and created a foundation from which our players can strive for success moving forward.
“We’d like to thank Cam, his wife Leana and sons Henry and Oscar for their significant contributions to our football club.”
The furthest Gold Coast’s AFLW team went under Joyce was a 2023 elimination final appearance before dropping off last season.
The Suns will begin their process of picking a new AFLW coach in the coming weeks.
