Without any ropes or harnesses, the 40-year-old completed the daunting 508m ascent in just under an hour and 32 minutes.
“It’s windy,” Honnold said when he got to the top before taking a selfie.
“I’m so psyched … And you know what, pretty tired actually.”
The entire event, delayed 24 hours due to weather, was streamed live on Netflix.
“I suppose climbing is always at the mercy of nature, that’s just how it goes,” Honnold said of the delay.
Star of documentary Free Solo, in 2017 he became the first person to free solo a full route on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. El Capitan is an around 915-metre sheer granite wall that is more than twice the height of the Empire State Building.
Hannold spent three months training for this weekend’s climb.
“You walk up to the base, you hop on to the building, you climb all the way to the top,” Honnold said on his podcast recently.
“No ropes. No gear. No margin of error.”
