Stuart Broad has dismissed Australian opener David Warner for a 17th time in Tests, with the England seamer only needing two deliveries to knock over his Ashes nemesis on day two of the Headingley Test.
The 37-year-old found Warner’s outside edge from around the wicket, with Zak Crawley accepting the catch at second slip.
Australia is currently 1-29, with Marnus Labuschagne (7*) and Usman Khawaja (20*) in the middle.
MATCH CENTRE: Australia vs England, third Test scoreboard
Earlier, England was bowled out for 237 another astonishing batting performance from captain Ben Stokes, who was nursing an injury on Friday afternoon.
Australian skipper Pat Cummins claimed six wickets as the visitors secured a narrow 26-run lead in the first innings — which could have been considerably larger if not for Stokes’ epic counter-attack.
Day two started horrifically for the hosts, with Joe Root exiting on the second ball of the day – Cummins’ searing delivery kissed the right-hander’s outside edge, with David Warner taking a smart catch at first slip.
Fellow Yorkshireman Jonny Bairstow followed shortly after, flashing at a wide delivery from Mitchell Starc and edging towards Steve Smith at second slip for 12.
England was in a spot of bother at 5-87 before Stokes combined with Moeen Ali for a patient 44-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
Scott Boland thought he had trapped Stokes on the pads for 10, with Australia reviewing the LBW decision – but the England skipper was saved by a millimetre on Hawkeye, with impact marginally outside off stump.
However, it quickly became apparent that Stokes was battling some lower back pain, hobbling between the wickets and requiring medical attention on multiple occasions.
Cummins finally drew the top edge from Ali in the 40th over, with Smith settling underneath the regulation chance at deep fine leg, gone for 21.
Chris Woakes needed to undergo a concussion test after copping a nasty bouncer from Starc on the helmet, but the England all-rounder responded by pommeling Cummins over deep mid-wicket for six.
The following over, Starc attempted another bouncer that Woakes tickled through to wicketkeeper Alex Carey — the right-hander wasted a review before departing for 10.
Mark Wood, fresh off his five-wicket haul in the first innings, commenced a blistering assault after the lunch break, smacking his first delivery for six and following up with a trio of belligerent boundaries.
However, the entertaining cameo ended on 24 (8) when Wood became Cummins’ fifth victim of the innings, with Mitchell Marsh settling underneath the catch.
Stokes, who was running out of partners, decided it was time to switch gears, hitting his next three deliveries off Cummins towards the boundary.
Australia started to show signs of fatigue – Starc put down a tough catch in the outfield before spinner Todd Murphy dropped a return chance the following delivery, with Stokes surviving on 45.
The Australians breathed a sigh of relief when Smith held onto a remarkable outfield catch at deep fine leg to remove Stuart Broad for 7 – but Stokes remained.
The England captain brought up his half-century by muscling Murphy down the ground for six, reaching the minor milestone in 86 balls. Cummins and his teammates would have been dreading a repeat of Stokes’ tenth-wicket demolition from four years earlier as he continued clearing the boundary rope and jockeying the strike.
However, after hitting five sixes and combining with the injured Ollie Robinson for a 38-run partnership for the tenth wicket, Stokes miscued a slog against Murphy for 80, giving the Victorian tweaker his maiden Ashes scalp.
