Only days after missing her side’s loss to Sunshine Coast Lightning, the Giants have confirmed Austin’s debut season at the club ends after only four games.
“Austin injured her foot at training last week, with subsequent scans revealing a fracture in her right foot,” the club said.
“Following consultation with a surgeon, as well as both the club’s and Diamond’s medical staff, the decision has been made to undergo surgery to repair the damage.”
It means Austin’s hopes of a potential Commonwealth Games call up are over, with the young goal shooter to miss 12 weeks.
“We’re really disappointed for Lucy, especially given how committed she has been since arriving at the club in the off-season,” Giants coach Nerida Stewart said.
“It’s a tough setback but we’ll wrap our arms around her and give her all the support she needs in her rehab and return to the court.
“We’ll now work through our options to find a replacement player who can step into the group and contribute over the coming weeks.”
Austin now joins Giants star Kiwi recruit Jane Watson, who injured both her MCL and calf in separate incidents in the Round 4 loss to the Queensland Firebirds, on the sidelines at the club.
Austin’s injury comes as Diamonds coach Stacey Marinkovich revealed when her Commonwealth Games squad would be announced.

“May 31 (that’s when) the squad is selected and then the team will be a couple of weeks after that,” she shared on Fox Netball.
“You can really see the talent (in SSN).
“Jessie (Grenvold) out there, I think you saw Elsa (Sif Sandholt) at the Firebirds – when there’s young kids stepping out there we’ve got good talent; it’s just getting them out on the court.”
The Giants are yet to announce Austin’s replacement for the remainder of the 2026 season.
