Nat Butcher has been ruled out with a knee injury, with Xavier Va’a to join the bench for his NRL debut.
The Roosters are 11th on the ladder but they’re still missing five players to Origin duties which sees axed winger Dom Young recalled to the side for his first game in over a month. Young was dropped for Mark Nawaqaniqawase with Billy Smith and Robert Toia preferred in the centres pushing the former rugby union Wallabies star to the wing. This sparked a release saga with the Knights in line to welcome back their prodigal son in a mid-season transfer. However, after agreeing to sign Young, the Knights then backflipped on their promise to pay for him for the remainder of 2024, according to Roosters coach Trent Robinson. Interestingly, Nawaqaniqawase while brilliant in attack on the wing, also has some deficiencies in defence and under the high ball like Young, which saw them lose to the Bulldogs, despite his brilliant try in a double against the ladder leaders. Nawaqaniqawase is arguably better suited to centre where he is filling in for Queensland bolter Robert Toia who is in camp with Lindsay Collins. Toia has been one of the Roosters’ best this season and Collins made a huge difference in his return from injury and both will be sorely missed. Angus Crichton, Connor Watson and Spencer Leniu are all in Blues camp. Nat Butcher returns from a knee injury in a timely boost. With Zach Dockar-Clay starting at hooker, young gun Benaiah Ioelu makes his NRL debut off the bench. Makahesi Makatoa, Salesi Foketi and Taylor Losalu all come into the 17 amid the Origin exodus.
Fpr the Sharks Sam Stonestreet (syndesmosis) is facing two months on the sideline but Jesse Ramien (eye) has been named after also getting injured against the Storm last week. Mawene Hiroti (knee) returns and Teig Wilton (shoulder) has been named on the extended bench.
