Brett Lee has been inducted into the into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, being rewarded for a stellar career which saw him terrorise batsmen between 1999 to 2012.

Cricket Australia released a statement on Sunday confirming the news, praising Lee for his “remarkable international career defined by pace, longevity and sportsmanship”.

Lee took 310 wickets across his 76 Test matches, to go with 380 wickets in 221 One Day internationals.

Adding to his resume, the fiery pace bowler played 25 T20Is and took 28 wickets, as well as playing a starring role for the Sixers in the early years of the BBL.

Lee won the Allan Border Medal in 2008 and was also named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2006, while being one of Australia’s most beloved figures.

Alongside his personal accolades, the 49-year-old won several Ashes campaigns and has three World Cups to his name, winning the 1999, 2003 and 2007 titles.

“Longevity in the game is probably my biggest achievement,” Lee said to Code Sports.

“To bowl 160km/h, but to bowl over 150km/h for 20 years consistently, that’s what I’m most proud of.

“I missed so many games, but to (bowl so fast for so long) meant I’d looked after my body. I’ve always trained the hardest I could. I’ve always done everything at 100 per cent. It takes a toll.

“You dedicate your life to running in and trying to bowl fast for as long as you can.

“I think back to when I was nine years of age and that’s what I wanted to do. I wanted to bowl 160km/h and play for Australia. To be recognised in this way is very nice.”

His popularity also spreads international, having a cult-like following in India and a successful band called ‘Six & Out’ which will come to an end in January, Lee revealed.

In reflection, Lee was simply proud to have played alongside some of the greats of the game.

“To think I even took one wicket with Warne and McGrath … playing with those legends and to just be picked in the XI was an honour,” Lee said.

“I feel so lucky. I played my whole career against Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Jacques Kallis, the three best cricketers to ever play the game.”

Australian cricket hall of fame chairman Peter King said also congratulated Lee on his monumental achievement.

“Brett Lee’s induction into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame is richly deserved.” he said.

“He was not only one of the fastest and most exciting bowlers the world has seen, but also an outstanding ambassador for Australian cricket.

“Brett’s impact transcended statistics — he inspired fans around the world with the way he played the game, the respect he showed opponents, and the pride he took in representing his country.

“Now a respected commentator, Lee continues to contribute to the game and its communities globally long after his final delivery.

“The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame celebrates players whose careers have left a lasting legacy on the sport.”
