Soon-to-be AFL games record holder Scott Pendlebury is among the sporting stars caught up in the collapse of a $75 million fund linked to a struggling A-League club.

It was one of the main companies behind plans for A-League side Western United to construct a major precinct in Tarneit, in Melbourne’s western suburbs, featuring a stadium plus a sporting, entertainment, health and retail precinct.
Former AFL player manager Jason Sourasis, who is being sued by former clients including Pendlebury amid allegations he mismanaged their investments, was overseeing the project.
The Sayers Road Trust included a reported $75 million of investments from current and ex-AFL players including Pendlebury plus Adam Goodes, Dyson Heppell, Jy Simpkin, Josh Battle and Mason Wood.
But with the company now being ordered into liquidation at the request of an investor, it has the broader Western Melbourne Group desperately seeking new sources of funding with the clock ticking.
An estimated $100 million of additional funding has reportedly emerged from new partners but “without urgent funding, the entire project and club, which is in hibernation for the 2026 season due to its financial issues, will collapse in a matter of weeks” according to the report.
The Australian Professional Leagues, the football governing body, is claimed to prefer a “clean reset” of the club and if that isn’t possible, a total shutdown of the club which also runs junior teams.
