The neon-soaked sparkle that lights up the Las Vegas Strip is no stranger to fireworks, a bedfellow to life’s biggest and brashest excesses.

Sin City earned its moniker for a reason – and when it comes to big fight nights, few places – save Madison Square Garden – do it like them.

Barrios vs Garcia | Sunday 22 Feb from 12pm AEDT | Ryan Garcia will attempt to win his first major world title when he challenges WBC welterweight titleholder Mario Barrios in Las Vegas. | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports.

It is fitting then that Ryan Garcia should head to Nevada in search of the life-changing riches he has long pursued – and long failed to take.

The Californian star has been considered one of the shining lights of American boxing for what feels like close to the best part of a decade.

A decorated amateur at youth level, with podium places galore beneath his feet and medals on his frame, it seemed like an easy springboard.

For a long time, it looked like it would be too. But then, Garcia blew his own prospects into orbit – and then did so again, and again, without fail.

At the core of a once beguiling, now frequently baffling boxing personality remains a fighter who undoubtedly still has the chops to succeed.

But if Garcia is to finally become a world champion against Mario Barrios on Saturday, he must avoid another implosion of his own creation.

RISING STAR HAUNTED BY SPECTRES

Maybe it stretches back to 2021. Garcia had amassed more than a dozen-and-a-half straight wins across two divisions, polishing his reputation.

“Just know that you’re talking about the next superstar,” he told ESPN at the time.

“I’m not here to play. This is my time, and I can’t wait to show my skills.”

The confidence was hard to miss.

He kicked off the year with a delayed bout against former London 2012 bantamweight gold hero and future Mayor of Hull Luke Campbell.

Garcia was the favourite in Dallas, tipped to make short work of an aging opponent. Instead, he hit the canvas for the first time in his career.

‘Flash’ recovered by dispatching Campbell by seventh-round stoppage to take the WBC interim lightweight strap. But cracks had seemingly formed.

Two defences against Javier Fortuna and Joseph Diaz fell apart for various reasons, and his place as a title challenger lapsed with it too.

Garcia recovered. He returned in 2022, carving out wins over Emmanuel Tagoe and Fortuna, the latter arguably his career-best showcase so far.

But then came Gervonta Davis, and the failed count – a spectre that has haunted his reputation since, pressing on the wounds left by Campbell.

In a catchweight contest in Las Vegas, Garcia was knocked down twice, and failed to climb from his knee in the seventh, with the contest waved off.

UNWOUND BUT NOT YET UNBROKEN

There was little shame in losing to ‘Tank’, a contentious figure beyond the ring but undoubtedly a shrewd performer within it. But the picture was wider.

Critics felt Garcia could have recovered to beat the count. Assumptions that he took the easy way out followed his footsteps as he beat Oscar Durate.

Maybe he would have restored his reputation if it had not been for the Devin Haney bout – an apparent crowning moment that turned into bloody ashes.

Instead, his extra weight, win-turned-no-contest and failed drugs test saw him banned from competition for a year, during which he spiraled outside the ring.

Inflammatory statements on social media and criminal charges followed – then, when Garcia finally returned to the ring in 2025, Rolly Romero turned him over.

He was subsequently banned by the WBC for further comments, before that was reversed to pave the way for a shot at Barrios and the welterweight crown.

Garcia insists there is no room left for error.

“Three losses. You’re just a complete loser now,” he said.

“You know what I mean? Like, two is like damn, but three is definitely a complete loser.

“I don’t like that third loss, so I’m giving everything I got.”

He knows that his fight this weekend is the biggest of his life. This is not just another comeback.

“For sure, 100 per cent,” he said.

“More stakes. Everything is just right on this world championship fight. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

“It’s either gonna be my burial or my resurrection, one of them.”

Fight Replay: Garcia DROPS Haney 3 times | 08:37

Garcia’s history of mental-health struggles is well-documented, and he appears to have regained his focus for this next test.

But the time for distractions is over. Garcia has long been self-assured in his destiny; now, he must put his money where his mouth is without any further mistakes.

Barrios presents a tangible threat – taller, longer, disciplined. Garcia is unfazed.

“I knock out these type of people, taller people, in disgusting fashion,” he said.

“Every time I sparred a taller guy, fought a taller guy, they just get clipped – and boom.”
