How Adelaide Oval shattered its own capacity this summer by the thousands… and why it’s the world’s best

In the past decade, Adelaide Oval has left few Test match spectators wishing they were anywhere else.

Australia’s traditional home of the day-night Test reverted to old habits this summer, with the pink-ball spectacle instead staged in Brisbane earlier this month.

Watch The Ashes 2025/26 LIVE and ad-break free during play with FOX CRICKET on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1.

The result? A staggering reset of the venue’s attendance benchmark, as 223,638 people passed through the turnstiles to watch Australia retain the Ashes over four-and-a-half days of play.

That figure eclipsed the previous record by almost 25,000 set eight years earlier in 2017 — also against England, and also under lights. Whether it’s a 2:30pm local start with the pink ball, or this year’s return to a 10am red-ball opening, Adelaideans, Australians and touring supporters simply cannot get enough of Test cricket at Adelaide Oval.

There is a uniquely magnetic quality to the ground, one that first centred around its most famous landmark: the scoreboard. Built in 1911 and still manually operated more than a century on, it towers over the northern end like a custodian of cricketing memory.

No discussion about Adelaide Oval is complete without it. It is one of the very few remaining scoreboards to have witnessed the likes of Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Jack Hobbs, Clarrie Grimmett and Victor Trumper.

Beneath it lies the northern hill; a rarity in Australian Test venues, and a beloved one. By mid-morning on any given day’s play, it becomes the natural home of touring parties and purists alike.

This summer, it again played host to the Barmy Army, as rowdy as ever despite the grim series scoreline. They made the hill as their own across all five days, yet remained impeccably classy, cleaning the area each evening before making their exit.

Since men’s international cricket moved in Perth from the WACA to Optus Stadium, Adelaide Oval has become the only major Test venue in Australia to retain a grassed hill inside its arena. Hobart’s Bellerive Oval offers a similar slope, but has not hosted a Test match since early 2022.

The contrast between the hill’s informality and the Oval’s towering eastern, western and southern grandstands has a very ‘Adelaide’ feel to it; hitting the sweet spot between casual and classy.

In a cricketing sense, the wicket has long offered plenty for players and spectators alike. While the occasional Test in recent years has been wrapped up inside three days, it more often than not provides a flatter batting track early before offering a generous amount of turn for spinners as the match wears on.

Between quicks exploiting the new ball, batters settling in, and spinners playing a decisive role in the later days, it offers something for every discipline.

But in all honesty, the ground’s greatest X-factor in the modern era arguably sits not just beyond the boundary rope, but also the grandstands. The Village Green, tucked behind the western stand on Adelaide Oval’s No.2 ground, has quietly become one of the finest spectator spaces in Australian sport. This is where the Oval truly separates itself from other venues.

Lined with marquees, eateries and ‘refuelling’ stations, the Green delivers rare space and accessibility without detaching spectators from the main contest.

A figure that truly speaks to the appeal of the Village Green is the opening-day attendance from locals. The crowd of 56,298 on day one of the third Test obliterated the previous record.

What makes the number even more remarkable is that it surpassed Adelaide Oval’s official capacity of 53,500 by nearly three thousand.

While that figure is clearly aided by members spread out beyond the grandstands, there are few grounds anywhere in the world that can legitimately (and legally) exceed their own listed capacity.

“I reckon you could make a strong argument that this is the best cricketing venue (across) the globe,” former England captain Michael Vaughan told Fox Cricket on day one.

“Lord’s is great, Cape Town is great. Mumbai, I like Mubai. But this place, with the walk over the river and bridge (into Adelaide Oval)…”

From the walk across the bridge and over the River Torrens to finishing your last drink in the Village Green, the venue offers something few can replicate. A Test match that feels as good as it looks.

Next summer, the city will host another red-ball match as the pink-ball Test finds its way to Melbourne next autumn. But very much like South Australia’s Gather Round, the Adelaide faithful will continue to roll out in the hundreds of thousands at every major sporting event — and for now, continue to do it better than anyone else.
