‘Won’t hear me for a while’: Teary star’s heartbreak laid bare as rival defends brutal Supercars act

An emotional Broc Feeney has fought back tears as his Supercars title hopes came crashing down in heartbreaking scenes on Sunday.

Billed as Feeney’s championship to lose, 2025’s most dominant driver walked away empty-handed in Adelaide.

Kayo Sports is the home of Supercars | Watch every race of the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship LIVE & ad-break free during racing. New to Kayo? Join now and get your first month for just $1.

Despite having a record 19 pole positions and 14 race wins to his name, it was rival Chaz Mostert who claimed the 2025 Supercars championship – despite just four race wins under the new finals system.

And more controversially, it was Mostert’s Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate Ryan Wood who made contact with Feeney – sending him from first to last on the opening lap in Adelaide to clear the path for Mostert’s title.

Adding to the drama, vision from inside the WAU garage showed the team celebrating the moment wildly.

And the devastation didn’t stop there for Feeney who then battled engine issues for the remainder of the race.

Clearly emotional, Feeney still fronted up for Fox Motorsport cameras – despite having no obligation to do so – and shared his title heartbreak.

“I just want to thank everyone at Red Bull Ampol Racing – it’s been a phenomenal year, something I’ll be very proud of for the rest of my life but yeah that’s the way it goes,” he said.

“That’s the new system that they’ve got.

“You can have a shocker in the last race of the year and it all falls apart.

“I just want to thank everyone on my crew – congrats to Chaz, obviously had a great finals series. Sort of a shame how it was all going down there at the start and then our issues came along.

“No matter what happened today the thing was going to break down unfortunately.

“I can’t thank my team enough, my family, friends, everyone that’s got my back (pauses) … I don’t think you’ll be hearing from me for a while, mate. I’ll be flying under the radar for a bit (sniffs).”

Speaking post-race, Wood was adamant the move was on.

“Obviously just lap 1 – I saw a gap and I went for it,” he told Fox Motorsport.

“I think 50 per cent of people will agree, 50 not (with the move). I got to watch the vision – I definitely had a car inside and got crowded down to the wall.

“That’s where the contact occurred so I thought he would know that I was going to race hard.

“I’m probably upset because it ruined my race … Obviously gutted that I got involved in something like that but yeah I just thought as soon as I saw the gap open I was like, well this is my opportunity because yesterday he ran away from me once he got in front of me.

“I was here to win the race today. I felt like I gave myself the best opportunity to do that going for the gap on lap one.”

Wood did offer his apologies to Feeney as Triple Eight teammate Will Brown, who finished third on Sunday, weighed in on the controversy, labelling Wood’s actions as “disappointing”.

“Not sure the play was on at the start there with what happened – it’s disappointing to see,” he said.

“In the end, Broc ended up having some dramas there, but I think it opens up the games in next year with what happened. And I’m looking forward to that.

“It’s disappointing for Broc … I think he really deserved that one.”

Feeney’s Triple Eight boss Jamie Whincup had described Wood’s move, which saw him cop a 15-second time penalty – as “grubby”.

But WAU boss Ryan Walkinshaw immediately hit back claiming the contact was “Broc’s fault”.

“He very clearly had Woody alongside him and pushed Woody into the wall!” he said.

“You can see Woody hit the wall and then go into Broc.

“Woody’s got nothing to lose – he was down the side of him. … He can’t exactly just disappear!

“Entirely Broc’s fault.”

Regardless of the opening lap drama, Fox Motorsport’s Steve Larkham was full of admiration for Feeney’s efforts.

“You were wringing it’s neck, you didn’t give up on it,” he told a distressed Feeney.

“I reckon you’re going to have 15 more shots at this … I know it’s not going to make you feel any better but thanks buddy.”

Discussing the moment post-race, Mark Skaife and Garth Tander felt Feeney left himself open to Wood’s early attack – given he only had to finish within two spots of Chaz Mostert to claim the title.

“Broc didn’t make the best start (from pole) … so when he was vulnerable to the pack, then that’s what happened,” Skaife said.

“You put yourself in a spot where you’re in danger.

Chaz: “Thank god for finals” | 01:04

“I thought in the end, Ryan Wood was definitely down the inside. But I didn’t think at that point that it really should have been contact.

“I never like to see that stuff actually play out in a way that inevitably has changed the result of a very dominant season from Broc Feeney.”

“It’s very, very hard to sit back here and say Broc probably didn’t need to race Ryan Wood that hard given that Ryan’s not a finals contender,” Tander added.

“But this is split-second decision making in the heat of battle.

“Absolutely when Broc didn’t get the start that he needed, he was on the back foot. We all knew that Ryan was going to put him under pressure and was going to attack him.

“For Broc to race him as hard and squeeze him against the wall, yes he didn’t need to do that. Ultimately at the end of the day Broc had that engine misfire – it took him out of the game anyway.”
