‘Can you believe it?’ Stunning Smith heartbreak as Kohli loses plot in rogue crowd taunt

Steve Smith’s quest for 10,000 Test runs has fallen heartbreakingly short again, with the Aussie star dismissed just one run shy of the historic figure on day three of the SCG Test against India.

Smith fell five runs short of 10,000 when he was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna in the first innings and it was Krishna again in the second innings who robbed Smith of reaching the milestone on in front of his home crowd.

Smith was dismissed for four, edging one to Yashasvi Jaiswal for four after being surprised by Krishna’s extra bounce.

The dismissal means he’ll end the Test series against India on 9,999 runs.

With the Aussies set to face Sri Lanka on opposition soil next month, Smith has missed the chance to achieve the historic feat on Australian soil.

“It’s not to be for Steven Smith,” Harsha Bhogle said on Fox Cricket.

“Can you believe it? We’re all standing here waiting for the great man to cross the final hurdle.”

With India needing to bowl Australia out under 162 runs to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, they were understandably fired up to pick up the key wicket of Smith.

No player more so than stand-in skipper Virat Kohli.

Following Smith’s wicket, Kohli had some fun with the SCG crowd and perhaps taking a shot at Smith, mocking Australia’s sandpapergate scandal by showing his empty pockets numerous times.

To confirm he was referencing the infamous ball-tampering scandal of 2018, Kohli then appeared to imitate the action of rubbing sandpaper.
