Australian captain Sam Kerr has cemented her legacy as one of Chelsea’s modern greats, becoming the club’s leading goal-scorer in WSL history overnight.
The 32-year-old achieved the milestone with a 13th-minute header during Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, putting a cross from teammate Niamh Charles past goalkeeper Katie Keane. It was her 64th WSL goal — coming 2296 days after her maiden goal for the club — surpassing the career tally of former Chelsea teammate Fran Kirby.

“There have been some pretty special goals in my career, but I don’t know if it gets more special than this,” Kerr said after the match.
“I probably didn’t play as much as I would have liked at the start of the season, but you’ve seen when I get rhythm and games under my belt I start scoring.
“I’ve not scored as many in the league as I’d have liked, but to come back from an ACL and still be top-scorer in the league for a club like Chelsea is great.”
Kerr, who joined Chelsea in 2019, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in January 2024 and missed the entire 2024/25 WSL campaign. She’s a two-time WSL Golden Boot recipient, claiming the award in 2020/21 and 2021/22.
“She is a world-class striker, and I’m happy to see her thriving after that long spell she had out with her knee, and I’m happy that she is back, scoring goals and what an achievement it is for an Australian as well,” Australian and Chelsea teammate Ellie Carpenter said on Sunday.
“She is such a legend for Australian football, and she sort of put Australian football on the map when she got introduced in the WSL.
“She is a phenomenal world-class striker, and Chelsea have been lucky to have her at this club and be their all-time leading goal scorer.”
Kerr’s future at Chelsea is clouded in mystery amid reports she’s considering a switch and joining Denver Summit in the NSWL.
Chelsea, now guaranteed a top-three finish on the WSL standings, will next face Manchester City in the Women’s FA Cup semi-final on Monday, May 11 AEST.
