‘Leverage to get him out’: Galvin advisers accused of pushing for early Tigers release

Under fire Tigers star Lachlan Galvin’s management and inner circle have been accused of using his contract saga as a means to agitate for an early release from his deal.

Watch your team in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership. Stream every round LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play, on Kayo Sports. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer.

Galvin’s Tigers contract does not expire until November of 2026, but he has already been dropped by Benji Marshall amid criticism of his coach and the odds of him seeing out that contract are widening by the hour.

Braith Anasta believes Galvin’s manager Isaac Moses, who has a history of agitating clubs, had to know what the reaction to his client’s early decision would be and thinks they may use it to get him out of the club sooner rather than later.

“Was the management and parents of Lachlan Galvin so naive to think that the decision that they have made, at the time they have made it, and the way that they have done it, was not going to get a reaction like this?” Anasta asked on NRL 360.

“Not only from his teammates, but from the fans and the media. That this kid wasn’t going to be put under pressure. Wasn’t going to be ostracised. Wasn’t going to have to deal with some big issues and some big backlash that would put him in a vulnerable position as a human being in a professional sport, that could impact his mental health and put him in this position?

“It is OK to point at the social media posts and Turuva took it too far, but let’s remember I would say the group around Galvin have agitated for this move and this could now be used as leverage to get him out, which I think is exactly what is happening.

“This isn’t the Tigers responsibility now because they have done everything they can. They have put money on the table and they haven’t told him he can go elsewhere. So the responsibility here lays on his management and his parents.”

However, The Daily Telegraph’s Dave Riccio believes Galvin’s hand was forced by the Tigers for making a $6 million offer, which forced his camp to respond at this time.

“We all know the Wests Tigers called the meeting to try and offer an extension to Lachlan Galvin,” Riccio said.

“He’s not off contract until the end of 2026. What’s the rush?

“Keeping in mind, he had asked for a release 12 months earlier and the Tigers said, we’ll convince you.

“Let’s not pretend that there wasn’t issues with Lachlan Galvin and Benji Marshall going back 12 months, hence the request for the release at that time.

“They said we’ll work with Galvin and his family on showing you that this is a club for you. Why couldn’t they just keep going this year with that?”

However, Anasta believes the Tigers were backed into a corner by murmurs Galvin wanted out of the club.

“Do you think they put the offer to Lachlan Galvin and his management because they had heard that he wasn’t happy and he was talking to other clubs?” Anasta asked.

“Potentially because he asked for a release 12 months ago,” Riccio replied.

“That’s absolutely a chance because they had work to do to convince him to keep him at the club 12 months ago.”

Anasta believes the club had to make a call on Galvin now or risk missing out on a number of players on the open market come the end of the year.

“Everyone’s putting this back on the Tigers for putting the deal forward,” Anasta said.

Luai “frustrated” with Galvin combo | 03:07

“But they’ve put the deal forward to say, here’s $6 million, mate. If you want to be a Tiger, you sign it. If not, you go because we’re hearing you want to go.”

But Riccio believes the Tigers had time to try and convince Galvin this was the club for him and a deep finals run could have changed his mind.

“What about showing the kid that they’re going pretty well,” Riccio said.

“They’re playing pretty well at the moment. Get to the finals. Win him through to the finals.”

However, Anasta has no doubt the Tigers were forced to act because they felt the agitation from Galvin’s camp, in particular from notorious player manager Isaac Moses.

“I told you the response the kid, the parents and the manager should have had,” Anasta said. “They should have said, this is a great offer and we appreciate it, but we’re focused on rugby league.

“But they felt the agitation the Tigers, so they had to make a move. And the agitation is still happening and now the agitation’s turning into the RLPA.

“And now the agitation’s turning into the social media posts and using that now. That’s how I see it.”

James Hooper revealed a number of instances where Moses has agitated clubs on behalf of his clients and the common denominator is him.

“The agitation and the manipulation and the power play and the attempt to get control over clubs is a disgrace and it’s Isaac Moses,” Hooper said.

“He’s got a long form line of doing it. You can go to Joseph Suaalii when he was at South Sydney and he wanted options, get out clauses in his contract every year to remain at the Bunnies, all the way back in 2020.

“Wayne Bennett just laughed and said, mate, I’m not giving you that. So then he took him to their arch rivals, the Roosters.

Elias defends Galvin from Tigers leaders | 04:07

“Nick Politis went out of his way to help Isaac Moses, who was deregistered at the time at one stage, get back into the game. Then he betrayed him and goes and takes him to Rugby Union.

“You can go back to the 2019 Grand Final with the Canberra Raiders. They’re flying. One of the best stories of the season. No one tipped them to make the Grand Final or do anything.

“And John Bateman, all of a sudden, as we’re leading into Grand Final Week, hang on, I’ve got a new manager and I’ve actually got a little bit of a beef with my contract.

“It’s just all destabilising. It’s all about ego. It really is hard to stomach.”
