Telling detail in Ashes squad reveal as England unleash fastest attack in a generation

England has revealed the 16 players that will touch down in Australia this summer, hoping to win back the coveted Ashes urn for the first time in a decade.

On Tuesday, the ECB announced its squad for the blockbuster five-Test campaign, which gets underway at Perth Stadium on November 21. England hasn’t won an Ashes series since 2015, while the nation’s most recent triumph on Australian soil was way back in January 2012.

However, led by coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, England has built an intimidating squad that features plenty of firepower – along with plenty of flaws.

Despite boasting one of the world’s best batting attacks, the team’s injury-prone pace cartel is accompanied by an unproven spin duo, while the No. 3 position remains a glaring question mark.

FIERY PACE BARRAGE

England arrives in Australia this summer with its fastest bowling attack in a generation.

Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Brydon Carse and Mark Wood, each capable of exceeding 145km/h, headline the touring party’s bowling attack for the Ashes campaign, receiving support from captain Ben Stokes and seamer Matthew Potts.

Rather than relying on the skill and precision of James Anderson, Ollie Robinson and Chris Woakes, England hopes to dismantle Australia’s top order with air speed.

And it’s a proven formula. Archer stunned Australia at Lord’s in 2019, Wood rattled them at Headingley in 2023, while Tongue has dismissed Steve Smith on multiple occasions in red-ball cricket.

Bowler rotation will be crucial for avoiding injury and fatigue, with England expected to switch up their bowling attack throughout the gruelling tour. However, for the series opener in Perth and the pink-ball Test in Brisbane, they may consider unleashing four fast bowlers at the expense of strike spinner Shoaib Bashir.

Meanwhile, with nine-day breaks scheduled after the first two Tests in Perth and Brisbane, England’s speedsters will have plenty of time to recover between matches, especially if they’re low-scoring affairs.

SURPRISE SPIN DUO

Will Jacks was the only surprise name in England’s Ashes squad, named as the second spinner alongside Shoaib Bashir.

The 26-year-old played two Tests against Pakistan in 2022, snaring a six-wicket haul on debut in Rawalpindi. However, he failed to take a wicket across the other three innings and hasn’t played a Test match since.

Regardless, having taken five wickets across three first-class appearances this year, Jacks has beaten out the likes of Rehan Ahmed, Liam Dawson and Jack Leach for a spot in the Ashes squad.

Although renowned as a white-ball specialist, Jacks’ versatility as a batting all-rounder and superb fielder gives England extra options when balancing its starting XI. For example, he could cover an injured Stokes at No. 6 if required, allowing for an all-out pace attack.

The tall off-spinner also has a similar skillset to Bashir, with their height and overspin considered valuable attributes on Australia’s hard decks.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Bashir has a modest record in red-ball cricket, averaging 48.72 at first-class level with an economy rate of 3.70. Despite being England’s first-choice Test spinner, he carries drinks for Somerset in the County Championship, sidelined in favour of Leach.

LINGERING NO. 3 DILEMMA

Harry Brook has been promoted to vice-captain for the Ashes Test ahead of Ollie Pope, a telling detail in the squad announcement that suggested his spot at No. 3 could be in jeopardy.

After a lengthy period of middling form, Pope is fighting to keep his spot in England’s Test XI, with promising young gun Jacob Bethell breathing down his neck. No doubt it’s a debate that will continue until the Perth Test.

The 27-year-old, who has captained England on five occasions, averages 35.36 in the Test arena, with nine hundreds to his name. He started the recent Test series against India with a century in Leeds but finished the five-match campaign averaging 34, disappointing returns in a high-scoring affair.

And having missed his chance to nail down the No. 3 Ashes spot, Pope’s position in the Test side is under threat.

Brook is regarded as Stokes’ eventual successor as Test captain, but Pope’s demotion has opened the door for Bethell to break into the starting XI.

The 21-year-old has never scored a first-class hundred, but he’s one of the most exciting young talents in the United Kingdom, with three fifties in four Test appearances to date.

Labuschagne hits ton for Queensland | 02:10

MOUNTING INJURY CONCERNS

England has several injury concerns to address before the series opener in Perth, which is just 59 days away.

Firstly, the captain – Ben Stokes missed the fifth and final Test against India with a shoulder problem, with the ECB declaring he “remains on track to be available” for the start of the Ashes.

However, it remains to be seen what role he can play with the ball in Australia this summer. The all-rounder claimed 17 wickets at 25.23 during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, taking crucial wickets during matches at Lord’s and Old Trafford.

Jacks is currently nursing a broken finger that has ruled him out of October’s white-ball tour of New Zealand, while Bashir also suffered a broken digit during the fourth Test against India in Manchester.

Woods, arguably the fastest bowler in the world, missed the entire English summer due to elbow and knee injuries, with his most recent Test appearance in August last year.

Elsewhere, the injury-prone trio of Archer, Atkinson and Carse struggle to play consecutive Tests without breaking down. Atkinson missed most of the English summer with a hamstring complaint, while Carse continues to battle a long-standing toe issue.

And Archer’s injury troubles are well documented.

Repetition key in Green’s bowling return | 01:02

BAZBALL ALL THE WAY

Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley are the only specialist openers in England’s Ashes squad, confirming that McCullum’s men won’t shift from the much-debated Bazball approach.

Despite being statistically one of the worst openers in Test history – 40 per cent of the time he’s dismissed for single figures – Crawley fits perfectly within the Bazball DNA, capable of producing game-changing performances against the world’s best. Just ask Pat Cummins about Manchester 2023.

Crawley has averaged 24.54 over the last 12 months, while that figure slips to 19.81 when excluding his Trent Bridge century against Zimbabwe. He is inconsistent and vulnerable to full deliveries, but England just needs one match-winning knock for his Ashes campaign to be branded a success.

England’s Test side has scored at nearly 4.5 runs per over since McCullum took charge in 2022, considerably higher than any other nation during that period, and despite failing to win a Test series against Australia or India after three attempts, the aggressive strategy has paid dividends.

But Australia remains the final frontier.

“I think if we stay true to what we believe in, backing it, and almost double down on the philosophy, it gives us our greatest opportunity,” McCullum told Sky Sports last month.

“I think that is what we are able to do at Lord’s. I think with the bat in hand, we were brave when we needed to be. (And) there are many different (aspects) throughout the series where we grew as a team.

“It is hard to say that when you have lost the last Test but throughout I thought the changing room was growing and was understanding that when we play our style, it gives us our greatest chance. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but it gives us our greatest chance.”
