Melbourne defender Steven May was absent from the Demons’ main training just days after reports that Victoria Police were called to his house.

The Herald Sun revealed on Friday that police attended his home following reports of possibly threatening behaviour, and the Demons released a brief statement on Wednesday evening.

It is understood somebody close to the troubled defender made the call to police.

“The Melbourne Football Club is aware that Victoria Police attended the home of Steven May last week,” the club said in a short statement.

“The club is not in a position to comment at this stage.”

SEN’s Tom Morris earlier reported the Demons had afforded May “a few days” away from the club to “navigate his personal situation”.

“What’s next remains unclear, though conversations are ongoing with relevant people behind the scenes,” he added via X.

May, who was put on the trade table at the end of last year, was also charged alongside Richmond star Dion Prestia for a fight at a Mornington Peninsula pub in December 2024, which resulted in one man being taken to hospital for treatment for injuries.

May and Prestia asked for the charges dropped to be withdrawn at a hearing in January.

The case was adjourned for a contest mention hearing at Frankston Magistrates Court on February 20.

The pair have claimed they were not present during the fight near the Sorrento Hotel.

The All Australian and premiership player has battled with form over recent seasons and was encouraged by Melbourne to explore his options at the end of last season.

There were murmurings May was bound to bolster the backlines of the Western Bulldogs or Collingwood but no trade eventuated.

May is out of contract at the end of this season and is expected to be fighting for a position in the senior side.

Melbourne captain Max Gawn is bullish on his side this year, despite losing premiership stars Clayton Oliver (GWS) and Christian Petracca (Gold Coast) during the off-season.

“Why not? Not one person has tipped us but that usually goes well for us,” Gawn told Triple M’s Mick in the Morning ahead of training.
